I was recently asked to do a "simple change" by my client. I immediately responded with a long-winded explanation of how this was not what we had discussed and so on... next time, I'll just use your analogy.

Thanks for the excellent write up.

I am probably what you would call a little kid down the block when it comes to design and selling of websites however I use the same analogy as you when it comes to explaining how a website is developed and constructed. My main focus is computer training for the disabled and elderly and it is subsidized by income from selling hosting packages for which I have to build basic websites sometimes.
I guess I am more of a land developer with a kit home option but I always give my customers all the tools they need to manage or move their site I they find I cannot satisfy their needs.

The method you have described makes it easy to demystify a website to a plumber wanting a web presence.

@Leanne: Thanks for posting your question! I wish I had more expertise with various analytics tools so that I could answer your question with authority, but most of my experience has been with WebTrends, HitBox, and Google Analytics.

Google Analytics (formerly Urchin) used to have just one thing going for it: free. Their recent update, however, drastically improved the tool. I typically recommend Google Analytics to most people as it seems to do most things well enough and is entirely free.

General Question: Currently our agency using Google Analytics if we are developing new websites for clients or if we are taking over the management of a current site.

I've heard alot both positive and negative regarding Google Analytics as well as some of the more popular paid software like Web Trends.

Anyone have any suggestions why one and not the other? Thanks.

@Oliver: It is definitely amazing how often clients will categorize major changes as "simple." I think web development (and even how websites work in general) is something of a black box for clients. They don't have a sense for which changes truly are simple and which are actually complex. Thanks for the comment!

Great analogy.
I find the most beneficial stage of building a site is spending many hours with the client so I understand their business and customer information needs as well as them having a realistic expectation aka "Blueprints from the Architect".

How many times have you heard I just have a few simple changes that will be really quick and easy? The house analogy will solve this ... "so you want me to move the bathroom to the other side of the house ;-)"
